1000 Books Before Kindergarten

1000 Books Before Kindergarten

Early literacy initiative.

The goals of this program are to promote reading from birth, to encourage parent-child bonding through reading, and to help establish strong early literacy skills of the children in our community, helping prepare them to be school-ready for kindergarten. Read with your child and keep track of every book you finish. Along the way, collect a prize every time you read 100 books. Once you've read 1000 books you've completed the challenge of 1000 books before kindergarten!

To participate, visit the Children’s Information Desk, where staff will sign your child up for 1000 Books Before Kindergarten. Children will be signed up using their library card. Don’t have a library card yet? It only takes a few minutes for staff to sign your child up for their free library card! Once signed up, you will receive your 1000 Books Before Kindergarten Log Book to use for tracking reading. Alternatively, there is a poster that you can print from home to keep track of your reading. Once you are all signed up just start reading!

Track your 1000 books!

Download a reading log poster  (printer needed). GPPL has booklets available for you to log your reading, so stop by our Children's Department to pick one up.
